How many convictions?: Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa asks Assistant State Prosecutor Charlie Guhit during the hybrid Committee of the Whole inquiry Tuesday, December 14, 2021 the total number of agricultural smugglers who were convicted in court from 2016 to the present. Guhit told Dela Rosa that the Department of Justice received 75 agricultural smuggling cases in Manila from 2016 to 2021 but only four of these were actually filed in court. He said 39 of the cases were dismissed. “As of the moment, I have no data whether these four cases got a conviction or were dismissed by the court but I can look into them and submit the result to the honorable committee at a later date,” Guhit said. The Senate is conducting an inquiry, in aid of legislation, into the rampant smuggling of agricultural products in the country and the ability of the Bureau of Customs to prevent it.
