Police law enforcement courts: Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, seeks the support of his colleagues for Senate Bill No. (SBN) 2331 or the Police Courts Act of 2021 which seeks to establish police law enforcement courts that will handle all civil and criminal cases involving the member of the Philippine National Police (PNP). Gordon, during the hybrid plenary session Tuesday, January 25, 2022, said the measure will require the Supreme Court (SC) to designate special courts throughout the country as the police law enforcement courts among existing regional trial courts to hear all cases involving police officers. The SC, Gordon said, would also designate appellate police courts from among the divisions of the Court of Appeals to handle all appeals coming from the police courts. “This bill is in no way a form of punishment but a guarantee of efficiency in handing of decisions and resolutions of cases. This will provide the public fair, impartial and speedy disposition of complaints for violations of constitutional right, PNP operational procedure and code of ethical standards committed by the PNP,” Gordon said.
