Establishing fish hatcheries: Sen. Cynthia Villar sponsors 11 local bills seeking to establish multi-species marine hatchery across the country during the hybrid plenary session Thursday, January 27, 2022. According to Villar, the Philippines’ fisheries sector provides an inexpensive source of marine protein for the population, livelihood for over 1 million Filipinos and foreign exchange. She said fishing is one of the major industries seen as a positive contributor to the country’s developing economy and food security. However, she said, productivity of marine fishery resources has been declining as a result of environmental degradation, among others, hence the need to build fish hatcheries all over the country.
