Stiffer penalty for perjury: Sen. Alan Peter S. Cayetano wants stiffer penalty for perjury as he expresses disappointment on the witnesses who gave false testimony before the hearing of the Senate and recanted their sworn statement at the court. During Monday’s plenary session May 29, 2023, Cayetano requested the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, together with the Committee on Social Justice, Welfare and Rural Development, to conduct again a hearing on Degamo’s case and focus on perjury. “It is already untenable or unsustainable that perjury in our country is ignored or not prosecuted. I know it is a long discussion but I would like to put on the floor and for our discernment whether Sen. Dela Rosa would be amenable to opening the hearing (on Degamo’s case) again, and the Committee on Justice would join and focus on the laws regarding lying under oath, including perjury and contempt,” Cayetano said.
