Civilian duties for AFP clerical positions: Sen. Chiz Escudero pledges to help create civilian positions within the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) during the Commission on Appointment’s meeting on the deliberation of the ad interim appointments and nominations of 30 senior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Escudero said the AFP is hiring soldiers to perform civilian duties. He said the soldiers are trained and even sent abroad for further studies but are assigned as drivers of military officials or their wives. “If you can get 50 percent, I will look for the other 50 percent in the budget to create the civilian items within the AFP for the 2024 budget,” Escudero told AFP Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. The senator said the civilian workers will have permanent positions with security of tenure because “it is by far cheaper to hire civilian personnel than to hire additional soldiers to do the job of a civilian.” (Bibo Nueva España/Senate PRIB)
