A step forward in pursuit of justice, equity: Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, presiding over Tuesday’s hearing of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights, September 17, 2024, discusses several measures that show the Senate’s commitment to justice, human rights and the betterment of the country. Some of the bills discussed seek to protect the rights and welfare of refugees and stateless persons by establishing a Refugees and Stateless Persons Board; establishment of Board of Claims to ensure that victims of unjust imprisonment and detention receive reasonable financial compensation for their suffering; measures which seeks to amend the Indeterminate Sentence Law to exclude criminal offenses against minors, which is essential to protect children; among others. “Each of these measures represents a step forward in our pursuit of justice, equity and national progress” Pimentel said.
