Address gaps in political system: Sen. Win Gatchalian raises concerns over the possibility that foreign countries, particularly China, may have infiltrated the Philippines’ political system. During a public hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Gatchalian expressed alarm over the vulnerabilities in the country's political and legal systems. He pointed out that foreign nationals have managed to assume influential political positions, citing the case of Alice Guo, also known as Guo Hua Ping, who ran and won as mayor in Bamban, Tarlac. “The scary thing is that it penetrated our political system. Guo Hua Ping ran and won as mayor. We don't know where else she will go—congressman, governor, or even a higher office,” Gatchalian said. The senator emphasized the need to address the gaps in the system that have allowed this to happen, such as the late registration of birth certificates, which he said criminals exploited to assume false Filipino identities. He also called for the defense and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and investigate these concerns. (Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau) |
