BETTER TO STEP UP PRESSURE FOR GMAS RESIGNATION THAN FILE NEW IMPEACHMENT CASE
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Q. Pimentel, Jr. (PDP-Laban) today
expressed reservation over the plan of opposition congressmen to
file a new impeachment complaint against President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo as he anticipated a reprise of her counter-moves
that killed the first attempt to impeach her last year.
Pimentel said it would be very difficult to impeach the President if
the administration congressmen, who control the House of
Representatives, will not shed off the despicable practice of voting
on the impeachment complaint on the basis of their partisan
loyalties, rather than on the merits or gravity of the charges
lodged against the President.
I can foresee another round of buying by Gloria of the congressmen
who can be bought, he said.
The lone senator from Mindanao said it may be better strategy for
all anti-Arroyo groups to step up the pressures on President Arroyo
to persuade her to resign.
Should Mrs. Arroyo resign, Senate Franklin Drilon will act as
interim president until a permanent successor is elected in a
special election.
Pimentel was reacting to the statement of House Minority Leader
Francis Escudero that the minority congressmen are reading another
impeachment case against the President, having gathered testimonial
and documentary evidences for the case. |
