VILLAR'S REACTION ON THE SUPREME COURT DECISION
ON PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION 1017
 

Senator Manny Villar, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Order, welcomes the Supreme Court decision on the unconstitutionality of Presidential Proclamation (PP) 1017.

"Rules such as PP 1017 is really out of place in a democracy. We all know that freedom of the press is an all-too-important component of any democratic nation," says Villar.

Villar adds: "The curtailment of press freedom would really not sit well with democracy-loving Filipinos, that's a given already."

To recall, at the height of the implementation of PP 1017, the office of broadsheet The Daily Tribune was closed down.

According to Villar, "It's good to know that the Supreme Court upholds and recognizes the basic constitutional rights of the citizenry, among which, freedom of _expression and assembly."
