KIKO INITIATES MOVE TO STRENGTHEN SENATE RULES GOVERNING INQUIRIES IN AID OF LEGISLATION

Senate Majority Leader and Committee on Rules Chair Kiko Pangilinan today pushed for the strengthening of the Senate Rules by refiling Senate Resolution 354 entitled A Resolution Calling for the Amendment of the Rules of the Senate Governing Inquiries in Aid of Legislation along with Senators Recto, Roxas, and Cayetano.

"The Constitution provides that the legislative branch has the duty to act as check and balance to its co-equal branches of government. Congressional inquiries are integral to this obligation as these hearings promote transparency and accountability in the dealings of the government and its officials, Kiko said.

My fellow senators and I are proposing amendments to the Rules of the Senate governing Inquiries in Aid of Legislation, in hopes of assuring witnesses that their rights will be respected and to encourage them to appear before Senate investigations in Aid of Legislation, Kiko reiterated.

This is to assure those who may have concerns about appearing in the Senate, including officials from the executive department, that their rights will be respected as mandated by the Constitution. These proposed amendments will also ensure that the cooperation of witnesses will not lead to their rights being prejudiced. We hope that this too may lead to better cooperation between the Senate and the executive department," Kiko ended.
