The reported creation of Presidential Commission to investigate the continuing extrajudicial killings smacks of arrogance and insensitivity. Adding another layer to the bureaucracy is not the answer. There are already enough mechanisms available for this, such as allowing the UN Independent Experts to come to the Philippines, or to convene the Joint Monitoring Committee on Human Rights formed respectively by the Government and the National Democratic Front. The Amnesty International has also recommended this.

If she is really serious about the extrajudicial killings, I challenge Mrs. Arroyo to provide reparation for the families of the victims, to end her total war policy and to remove controversial officers such as General Palparan. Condemnation is not enough. By reason of governments failure to protect human rights, there must be reparation for the suffering of the victims families. Get real, Mrs. Arroyo. Huwag na nating Lokohin ang Taong bayan!
