Press statement of Sen. Jamby Madrigal

This day is both a time to celebrate and a time to condemn. As we observe the first International Women Human Rights Day, we remember the women who have dedicated their lives to the cause of human rights. Since the time of the dictatorship, women have been at the forefront of the human rights struggle.

It is ironic therefore that, at a time when we have a woman in the halls of power do we see an increasing trend of political repression and oppression against women human rights defenders. Since Mrs. Arroyo assumed power, more than eighty women were extra- judicially killed and almost thirty women have been missing. This situation will aggravate in the wake of the proposed anti-terrorism bill.
