Red Cross distributes relief goods to Mandaue fire victims

Over three hundred families affected by the recent fire in Cebu received relief assistance from the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) yesterday. This is the first large-scale relief operation following the massive Mandaue fire which destroyed 1,000 homes last March 7. This is the initial relief distribution we are conducting, said PNRC chairman Richard J. Gordon, who led the relief operation in several evacuation sites. We are still confirming the names of the rest of the victims at least 1,000 families so we can also extend the necessary assistance to them. The 300 beneficiaries, identified by the Cebu Red Cross Chapter as among the poorest of the poor, are currently living in evacuation centers in Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School (92 families), Norkis Compound (24 families), Mandaue City Central School (84 families) and Old Market (100 families). Each family received food packs consisting of six kilos of rice, assorted canned goods, noodles, and compact food. Used clothes and tarpaulin sheets were also provided. This is a massive fire incident which unfortunately occurred during Fire Prevention Month, said Gordon, who together with the Red Cross team also surveyed the razed areas of Brgy. Guizo and Brgy. Mantuyong. We will bring more relief goods for the rest of the victims, hopefully next week. For his part, Mayor Teddy Ouano expressed his gratitude to the PNRC for coming to the aid of the victims and ensuring that their basic needs are covered. At the press conference held for the PNRC at the Waterfront Hotel, Ouano said that the city government will continue to work together with the PNRC in addressing the immediate needs of the fire victims.
