PIMENTEL DENOUNCES NAGA CITY
MAYOR ROBREDO'S DISQUALIFICATION

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Q. Pimentel, Jr. (PDP-Laban) today denounced the arbitrary and unjust decision of the Commission on Elections to disqualify Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo from running for public office.

Pimentel said the administration-instigated disqualification move against Robredo smacks of the policy of vindictiveness being followed by the powers-that-be against independent-minded and principled local government officials who have refused to be reduced into lapdogs or surrogates of Malacañang .

?The Comelec decision to disqualify Mayor Robredo from running for public office is a travesty of justice and an oppressive act against the residents of Naga City who elected him,? he said.

Pimentel said the decision to disqualify Robredo is ridiculous and illogical because he has been elected mayor of Naga City four times by his constituents on the basis of his performance, competence and leadership.

A testament to his qualities as an exemplary local government executive is the fact that he won the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for outstanding community leadership in 2003.
