CHA-CHA SHOULD BE A NATIONAL ISSUE IN 2010--GORDON

Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendments, Revision of Codes and Laws, yesterday emphasized that charter change should be a national issue tackled in 2010.

"Charter Change is necessary, but it should be a national issue in the next elections. I am in favor of Constitutional change but after 2010. Kung ngayon mo bubuksan yan, magkakaroon lamang ng isyung magdadala ng hidwaan at hiwalayan," Gordon said.

"Let us tackle the economic provisions first. Changing the structure of government is not the solution. We need to fine-tune the Constitution, not overhaul it completely. How do we bring in investments? Do we liberalize the entry of foreign investments or give Congress the flexibility to regulate it?," he noted.

Gordon added that any amendment to the Constitution should enable our country to forge long-term solutions for the development of a strong national economy. "It should not be change for the mere sake of change, but change that will improve this country and the lives of our people."

The senator also insisted that the proposals should be a product of careful reflection on the needs of our country, with the goal of making the Constitution less rigid, more flexible, and ultimately responsive to the need of the people.

"I respect and abide by this Constitution, even though I did not vote for it and was against the way it was forced en masse upon the public. Hindi siya naintindihan ng mga tao. But do I want to see it changed for the good of the people? Absolutely." Gordon said.
