EVENTS IN THE LOWER HOUSE
Reality in RP politics - Villar

Senate President Manny Villar said that the changes in the House leadership yesterday reflected "the reality in Philippine politics" and displayed "the grip of the Palace on the Lower House."

In a radio interview, Villar said, "This is the stark reality in Philippine politics. We have seen the grip of the Palace on the Lower House and this is not good for our democracy. It would be better if our setup is according to that which is stated in the Constitution: Congress is a separate and independent body."

"As Senate President, it is my duty to be in communication with the new Speaker and assure him of our commitment to maintain and improve the relations between the Senate and the House."

"This is because the nation should not suffer on account of politics in the House," the Nacionalista Party president stressed.

Asked to comment on the fate of the former Speaker, Villar said, "I understand the pain felt by Speaker Joe de Venecia because I have experienced the same - those you consider to be with you suddenly deserting you. It is painful."

On Commission on Appointments House panel head and newly elected House Speaker Prospero Nograles, the Senate President said, "We have a good working relationship. Both Speaker De Venecia and Speaker Nograles are my friends. The Congressmen have already spoken and we in the Senate respect their decision."
