to help typhoon victims

The Liga ng mga Barangay ng Pavia, Iloilo passed resolution no. 2008-7 expressing gratitude to Senate President Manny Villar for being the first national government leader to give financial assistance to their municipality in the wake of typhoon Frank.

Pavia is one of the hardest hit in Iloilo, along with Barotac Viejo, Sara, Maasin, Cabatuan, and Sta. Barbara.

"We recognize the goodness of Senate President Manny Villar for being the first national government official to provide financial assistance to Pavia, Iloilo in this most trying time in the history of our municipality," the resolution passed on July 4 said.

The Pavia barangay leaders thanked Villar who gave P1.5 million to the barangays of Pavia who were affected by the killer floods brought about by typhoon Frank on June 21.

It was Pavia mayor Arcadio Gorriceta who informed the Liga ng mga Barangay about the Senate President's prompt financial assistance.

"Whereas the whole municipality is grieving from the loss of many lives and properties because of the flash floods which killed at least 12 persons, affected 9,800 families, and damaged thousands of homes," the resolution said.

Yesterday, Senate President Manny Villar personally led the distribution of relief goods in Iloilo and checked on the conditions of his kasimanwas anew at the Sta. Barbara gym, the Pavia Municipal Hall, the Janiuay Municipal Hall, and at the Dumangas Municipal Hall.

Since the inundation of Iloilo, Villar, who hails from the place, has directed a series of relief operations for the victims of the typhoon.

As Senate president, he also initiated "Tulong Kapwa" which gathered donations from employees and staff of the Senate, including help from other donors. Earlier, Villar gave one year of his salary as a legislator for the relief efforts, aside from many other forms of assistance.
