Pia Cayetano is voters' No.1 choice for senator in 2010

If the May 2010 national elections were held today, Senator Pia S. Cayetano will emerge as the top choice for senator of Filipino voters, according to a July 1-14 survey conducted by polling firm Pulse Asia.

Cayetano, an independent, obtained 48.2% of votes topping voters' preferences, followed by fellow incumbents Jinggoy Estrada (47.3%) and Manuel Roxas II (46.0%).

The lady senator, who currently chairs the senate committees on health and environment, is the principal author of the Anti-Hospital Detention Act of 2007 (RA 9439), Oil Spill Liability Act of 2007 (RA 9483), Anti-Rabies Act of 2007 (RA 9482) and co-author of the Cheaper and Quality Medicines Act of 2008 (RA 9502) which was enacted recently.

She previously placed second in the March senatorial surveys of both Pulse Asia and the Social Weather Stations.

Landing fourth and fifth slots in Pulse Asia's July survey, respectively, are former Senate President Franklin Drilon (44.1%) and 2007 opposition senatorial candidate Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel Jr. (39.0%).

At sixth is administration senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago who obtained 37.2%, while former senators Sergio Osmeña and Ralph Recto, the newly-appointed NEDA secretary general, tied for seventh and eight places after similarly obtaining 35.6 percent of votes.

Administration senator Ramon 'Bong' Revilla Jr. (34.6%) and opposition senator Jamby Madrigal (34.5%) rounded up the ninth and tenth places.

Pulse Asia's nationwide survey was based on face-to-face field interviews conducted from July 1-14, 2008 using a multi-stage probability sample of 1,200 representative adults 18 years old and above. It has an error margin of +/-3% at 95% confidence level.

Sub-national estimates for each of the geographic areas covered in the survey (i.e., Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) have a +/- 6% error margin, also at 95% confidence level.
