Jinggoy urges LGUs to provide free shuttle service to OFWs

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada urged local government units to follow the lead of the Muntinlupa City and provide free shuttle service to departing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on their way to the airport.

Estrada said the Muntinlupa City government is offering "Free Airport Departure Service" to residents who will be leaving the country to work as OFWs.

Estrada, concurrent chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development and Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Labor and Employment, said helping the departing migrant workers to get free rides to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) or other international airports in the country will help reduce the expenses of the workers and their families.

"Prices of everything have increased and local government units could give departing OFWs a break by providing free rides to the airport," Estrada added.

He said other mayors should follow the example of Muntinlupa and provide free shuttle service to their local OFWs.

Muntinlupa's Public Employment Service Office (PESO) said residents who were employed through the local government's various job fairs could avail of the free shuttle service.

The PESO said OFWs should come to their office to register and ask for assistance for the free shuttle service and on the day of their departure the city government will provide a vehicle to take the workers to NAIA.
