Concerted effort needed to mitigate climate change -- Loren

Senator Loren Legarda yesterday revealed that an agency that would look after the implementation of planned framework for climate change will be created in the face of the worsening environmental condition spawned by global warming.

Legarda also called on all sectors to join hands in the concerted effort intended to cushion the impact of the climate change, which she said has a domino effect on all.

"We have to move now. We have to exert effort to address this grave problem on climate change before it's too late," warned Legarda, who has filed bill calling for the creation of a commission on Climate Change.

Legarda is batting for the creation of a Commission on Climate Change which she said will be the policy-making body, with coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating functions of all climate change-related activities of the government and its instrumentalities.

"It is time we laid down the strategy for us to know the places that are more likely to be affected by global warming, and that people in the would-be affected areas will have to be ready for it," she said.

For starter, Legarda said, the media will be tapped to disseminate information on the climate change and global warming, and help the people, especially the farmers and fisher folk in far-flung areas, to learn the techniques to cushion the effect of the climate change.

"Very few perhaps realize the considerable effect climate change may bring on us, but it's more than that as it cuts across on all sectors with lasting effects. It has direct effect on nation's economic activity," Legarda explained.

Legarda, chair of the Sub-committee on Climate Change also cautioned the government to find ways to lessen the green house gas emission which contributes to pollution.

Legarda also asked both Houses of Congress to support the bill and for the government to ensure the implementation, to help the millions of Filipinos vulnerable each time a calamity with far-reaching scope strikes.

Legarda noted as proof the dwindling catch of fishermen because of the ever-changing condition which practically destroys the coral reefs.

She also cited the regular occurrence of landslide, erosion and mudflows in areas ravaged by typhoons.
