ON ENVIRONMENT

Pasay City Mayor Wenceslao "Peewee" Trinidad should be commended for deploying "environment cops" to implement a city ordinance prohibiting the littering, dumping and scattering of garbage in yards, streets and other public places.

A news report said that the mayor deputized selected personnel of the Traffic and Parking Management Office to enforce the clean city ordinance passed in 1999 requiring all city residents and owners or lessees of commercial and other establishments to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings.

Apparently the enactment of the ordinance had not been properly observed by many of the city residents and commercial establishments. The mayor's move is imaginative and appropriate, and should be followed by other local executives.

A clean environment is necessary to enhance the health of individuals and communities and also prevent diseases. As founder of the NGO Luntiang Pilipinas (Green Philippines), I suggest that municipalities should also adopt permanent programs for the planning of trees and the cleaning of rivers to improve the environment. This would lower the emission of toxic gases and help prevent climate change.
