Entrepreneurship: An idea which time has come

Nacionalista Party President Senator Manny Villar, whose key advocacies include the promotion of entrepreneurship in the country, is pleased that entrepreneurship is becoming a popular option among professionals, new graduates as well as students.

"Now more than ever, entrepreneurship as an option is an idea whose time has come. More and more Filipinos are venturing into businesses of their own. An increasing number of start-ups are being established in various business sectors particularly in food and retail," says the former Senate President.

Villar adds entrepreneurship courses have become highly in demand in colleges and universities nationwide. "This was so different then when I was going to school myself. There was not even a college subject much less a course then. Now, almost all business schools and regular colleges and universities offer entrepreneurial courses or training. The graduates from such courses when they start their business venture will eventually become job creators, which the country badly needs right now in order to solve the unemployment problem," Villar explained.

In his talks during commencement exercises or graduation ceremonies, Villar always emphasize on the benefits and advantages of entrepreneurship as he encourages graduating students to become employers instead of employees to help create jobs for millions of unemployed in the country.

According to Villar, the ongoing recession is also no hindrance in putting up a business since he cites, "Real entrepreneurs see opportunity in crisis and hardships. Good business people become bargain-hunters during gloomy economic times. They rescue ailing businesses and turn them around to become profitable again."

Villar further cites that companies which are downsizing can in fact do the laid-off employees a favor by equipping them with entrepreneurial skills or even lending them capital to start up their own business venture.

"Many companies are good enough to provide livelihood skills training to employees who will be laid off or declared redundant to help them. They can extend more support by providing start-up capitals as well, which their former staff can use to establish a small business. Entrepreneurship can rescue people from unemployment," adds Villar.
