Press statement of Sen. Loren Legarda

On swine flu 'pandemic'

The Department of Health must consider going on its highest alert level in the face of the World Health Organization (WHO) announcement that the swine flu virus may reach pandemic proportions.

Globalization has made the quick spread of diseases a nightmarish reality and the Philippines must act swiftly and decisively, especially with the big number of overseas Filipinos who may be at most risk.

Government's allotment of P10 million to purchase more anti-viral drugs is a pittance considering that in worst-case scenarios, the country must already have everything that are needed to react properly and swiftly.

On DepEd review of school feeding program

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus was correct in ordering a review of his department's school-feeding program due to an allegation that noodles being given to students are overpriced while not being nutritious enough.

A complaint had been filed and it is only proper for the Department of Education to look into its veracity so it can act accordingly, including the termination of its supply contract, if so warranted.

Instead of noodles, I propose that students be fed fortified rice because the latter is more nutritious, especially when served with Malunggay and broth. Noodles too can be processed with grinded Malunggay to make them nutritious and at par with the expensive spinach pasta served in high-end restaurants.

On swine flu and state of emergency

Talks are swirling that the administration may use the global swine flu scare to declare a state of emergency and cancel the 2010 elections. If true, that would be the height of insensitivity as it would exploit a very real problem for the purpose of staying in power.

Personally, I do not intend to give credence to such forecasts because it will not happen -- the people will not let it happen.
