KIKO PANGILINAN: ALLEGED DESTABILIZATION PLOT VS GOVT MUST NOT LEAD TO A NO-EL SCENARIO

Independent Senator Francis 'Kiko' Pangilinan warns Palace officials to get to the bottom of the recent string of bombings and bomb threats, and put the culprits behind bars as soon as possible.

"Palace officials must stop pointing fingers. The opposition has nothing to gain by destabilizing the government, not when a national election is about to take place. Who has got more to gain by creating the atmosphere of chaos and instability?"

Pangilinan calls on Malacanang to take the matter seriously and crack down on this national security issue.

"We call on Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro to get to the bottom of this. It isn't enough for Secretary Norberto Gonzales to dismiss the incidents by saying that these usually happen near SONA, as if bombings are common fare and that we should not be alarmed. It appears this government is not serious in going after these destabilizers. Are they afraid that doing so will unmask their own people as the perpetrators?"

Pangilinan adds that Filipinos are gearing up for major changes in governance through an honest election in 2010, and that Malacanang must ensure that the polls will take place.

"We urge the public to remain vigilant and not allow this issue to lead our country back to the dark ages of martial rule, or possibly worse."
