Personal safety lessons in schools a must

The inclusion by the Department of Education of lessons on personal safety in elementary and high schools is most welcome as our children must be well-informed on how they can protect themselves from injury as well from exploitation.

Children are most vulnerable to hazardous conditions that may be prevailing in some schools, whose construction may not meet safety standards or whose features like stairs and balcony railings may be contributory to preventable accidents.

They must also be protected against elements that take advantage of their innocence, and I am referring to drug pushers and other lawless elements, including sexual predators who had gone high-tech through the internet in luring in unsuspecting children.

(The special lessons will be integrated in Sibika at Kultura in the elementary levels and in Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika for high schools, according to Deped)

Big 3 must follow Unioil's example

The prices of petroleum products in the Philippines are said to be among the lowest in the world save for those countries that provide consumers subsidies. Still, I think that the major oil players in the country - the so-called Big Three - must take the example of small player Unioil in rolling back the prices of unleaded gasoline, diesel and LPG.

If Unioil can reduce the price of its gasoline by four pesos per liter, I see no reason why Chevron, Shell and Petron cannot do the same, considering that they even have the economies of scale on their side, considering their market reach and the volume of their respective business.
