Gordon: Country's leaders should have vision, competence and track record

Senator Richard J. Gordon (Ind.) today reiterated his call to the Filipino electorate to choose the next leaders of the country based on the candidates' competence, track record and vision for the nation.

Gordon made the statement after Senator Mar Roxas gave way to Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III as the standard bearer of the Liberal Party for the May 2010 Elections.

"I am happy for Noynoy. But like any candidate, he should have the vision, competence and track record to present to the people. Lahat ng tatakbo ay dapat bukas sa panunuri ng tao dahil susukatin ang kanilang kakayahang mamuno at ito ay malaking hamon sa lahat at sa bansa," he said.

"The Presidency is not inherited, it is earned.. It is important that you have the capability to motivate people and show your track record of excellence in leadership and change. You have to prove to the people that you are capable of changing the country," he added.

The senator explained that the people should scrutinize the qualifications of those who wish to seek the highest political position of the land and not be influenced by mere popularity, financial edge or age of the candidates.

He said the electorate should look into the track record of the candidates and see what they have consistently done in their communities that made a difference in the lives of the people that they served.

"Our country needs a leader and not just a political figure. We need a leader who knows not only what the country needs, but also what should be prioritized among those needs and how each necessity should be addressed," Gordon said.
