Loren backed by farmers, fishers, IPs groups

A day before Labor Day, various sectoral partylist groups reiterated their support for NP-NPC-LDP Vice Presidential candidate Senator Loren Legarda for being a staunch advocate of farmers, fishers, and indigenous peoples.

Sectoral partylists Pamamalakaya, Katribu and Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) rally behind Loren for her platform on the environment, which includes helping farmers and fishers adapt to climate change, and conserving ancestral lands.

According to KMP and Pamalakaya, Loren is the only vice presidential candidate carrying the issue of the environment as part of her platform. She is the only vice-presidentiable that acknowledges how droughts and floods damage the harvest of farmers and fishers.

Loren has called the issue of climate change a gut issue, an issue connected to the productivity of farmers and fishers and food price hikes. She has been pushing for more investments to agriculture, and more support for farmers through equipments, farm-to-market roads, access to credit and technical assistance.

Through Loren's initiative, brine freezers have been distributed to farmers in the provinces, children of farmers and fishers have been given scholarships, and green jobs have been created.

Katribu, the partylist representing indigenous peoples, backs Loren for her platform of promoting genuine participation and representation of indigenous peoples' at all levels of government decision making.

Katribu praised Loren for respecting the culture and beliefs of indigenous peoples, and acknowledging their right to ancestral lands as part of their heritage. They unite with Loren's pro-poor and pro-environment platform, and her initiatives for empowering indigenous communities.

Loren has called for the attainment of peace based on social justice by supporting peace initiatives that address militarization in indigenous territories. She also called for the speedy resolution of tribal conflicts.

She has pushed for infusing funds necessary to develop the four million hectares of land awarded by way of Certificate of Ancestral Domain Titles (CADTs) and Certificates of Ancestral Land Titles (CALTs). According to Loren, this will make the IP communities not only self-sufficient but provide them with a chance to contribute the produce derived from their lands to the Philippine economy.

"I am honored and thankful for the support of our farmers, fishers and indigenous peoples. We will continue our crusade to raise their livelihood, and protect the environment for them and for the Filipino people," Loren said.
