Pia lauds court decision allowing 'Morong 43' nursing mom
to stay with baby in PGH

"I welcome the decision of the Morong Regional trial Court granting the appeal of Judilyn Oliveros, one of the detained 'Morong 43' health workers, to be released on recognizance to allow her to stay with her newborn son and breastfeed him at the Philippine General Hospital.

"Justice Secretary Leila De Lima should also be lauded for specifically instructing government prosecutors to drop any opposition to the appeal of Judilyn's lawyer on humanitarian grounds. This became the basis of the RTC in reversing its earlier decision ordering Judilyn's return to Camp Bagong Diwa immediately after she gave birth on July 22

"Release on recognizance is within the court's discretion, especially in humanitarian cases such as that of Judilyn, a nursing mother whose rights as a woman were violated when she was forced to care for her newborn inside a jail cell which obviously has inadequate facilities for maternal and neo-natal care."
