GUINGONA CALLS FOR SUPPORT FOR DRRM INITIATIVES

Senator Teofisto "TG" Guingona III delivers a speech as a Philippine representative in the High level side event at the UN General Assembly's Thematic Debate on Disaster Risk Reduction in New York City today. Guingona shared to the participants that the awareness on the need for a more comprehensive DRRM framework was brought about by the after-effects of Ondoy and Pepeng.

He also shared his experiences in the passage of the DRRM Act of 2010, during the Philippine 14th Congress on the 27th on July 2010, which strengthens the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management System, provides for the National DRRM Framework and institutionalizes the National DRR Plan. Lastly, he presented three points of action for the all stakeholders to consider in DRRM.

"I would like to call for support on the cooperation in developing internationally accepted standards in monitoring and evaluation of DRRM initiatives, enhancing resources on DRR through the establishment of community-owned Catastrophe Insurance Fund Pools and international support on the localization of DRRM with the strong participation of civil society organization," Guingona said.

This high level UN side event is a multi-stakeholder dialogue between youth, NGOs, UN agencies, Government and partners aims to come up with a clear set of five proposals in integrating DRR and development, addressing risks which undermine sustainable development.
