ANGARA PROPOSES LONG-TERM ENERGY SOLUTION

As oil prices continue to soar, Senator Edgardo J. Angara urged the government to explore sustainable measures to address oil price increases and ensure stable oil supply in the country.

He stressed that the solution to higher electricity and fuel costs lies in our capacity to explore other indigenous sources of energy which include biomass, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and algae in order to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

"High fuel prices are complicating economic and monetary policymaking and are being compounded by the region's challenges. These other challenges include natural calamities like floods and earthquakes," Angara said, chair of the Congressional Commission on Science, Technology and Engineering (COMSTE).

"These issues can be tackled by using Science and Technology (S&T) solutions, which COMSTE has been promoting. The development of electric vehicles and green transports such as electric tricycles, hybrid jeepneys, buses and electric bicycles is one of the priority projects of COMSTE as they have the potential to lessen pollution caused by conventional transportation and the dependency on fossil fuels," he added.
