Transcript of Ambush Interview of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile

On the Impeachment Trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona

Q: 'Yung opinion sir, di ba base dun sa napapanood dito sa hearings?

SP: Oo. Pero 'yung evaluation niyan ay subjective eh. It is analyzed by people who are trained in handling evidence. Di ba?

Q: Sir, walang pressure? Kung may mga ganoong result ng surveys, walang pressure dun sa mga senator-judges? Considering sir na election.

SP: I cannot speak for the others.

Q: But, for you sir? May pressure ba?

SP: Wala. I will decide it according to the evidence and nothing more.

Q: So, hindi nyo i-ko-consider itong mga result ng survey?

SP: Basta ako, ebidensya lang ako eh. I remember the impeachment case of Andrew Johnson, the vice president of Lincoln and he was saved by one senator. The voting was almost even and one senator voted in his favor to save him. This guy was destroyed by public opinion, but later on, it turned out that he was correct. You can read that from the book written by President Kennedy, Profiles in Courage.

Q: Sir, what do you think of this survey na February 26 to March 6?

SP: I don't know.

Q: Sir, hindi pa kasi nakakapag-presenta ng ebidensya yung depensa eh.

SP: I'm not concerned about surveys when it concerns the administration of justice. We are the administering justice here and the classic case of surveys that was wrong is the one on the cross. He was a product of a survey. He was judged by a survey, but until now people are worshipping him. Di ba?

Q: Sir, if you are not affected by the survey sir, okay lang na magkaroon pa ng ganitong survey?

SP: Hindi ko na sasagutin 'yan. Bahala kayo, kanya-kanyang paningin yan eh.

Q: Pero hindi ba masyadong maaga para mag-survey? Tapusin muna natin man lang 'yung depensa?

SP: Hindi ko alam. Basta ako, ebidensya ang pagbabatayan ko.
