ANGARA, BINAY URGE SUPPORT FOR UP
PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS IN BGC

Senator Edgardo J. Angara and Vice-President Jejomar C. Binay headlined the groundbreaking ceremony of the University of the Philippines (UP) Professional Schools at the Bonifacio Global City, Taguig on Tuesday.

In his speech, Angara underscored the importance of revitalizing research and development (R&D) in education. The Chair of the Senate Committee of Education, Arts and Culture said that the Philippines to have the leading research and development centers for post-graduate studies in Asia, but has since been overtaken by Singapore and Korea.

"The Philippines neglected research. UP is still in the top 500 universities but is slowly descending the ladder. The UP Professional Schools will help us recapture our spot," said the former UP President and current Chairman of the UP Law Centennial Commission.

"We envision a professional school that will produce high-level graduate students. The heart of a university is the research and development in its graduate schools. In this sense, true graduate schools here in the Philippines are endangered." Angara said.

"Through UP Professional Schools, we can become the center of gravity in graduate education once more."

During the ground breaking, Vice President Jejomar Binay, a product of the UP College of Law, asked for pledges from the guests to finally realize the dream. "Pledges lang naman, para magkatotoo ang pinapangarap na natin," he said.

The UP Professional School will stand on the 4,300-square-meter University Park donated by the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA). The Professional School will initially include the College of Law, College of Business Administration, College of Engineering, School of Statistics, and UP Open University.

UP President Alfredo Pascual, BCDA President and CEO Arnel Paciano Casanova, UP Diliman Chancellor Caesar Saloma, UP College of Law Dean Danilo Concepcion, and College of Law Alumnus Henry Gozon, Taguig Mayor Laarni Cayetano, and UP Regent and Aurora Representative Juan Edgardo "Sonny" M. Angara were all present during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Angara, through the UP Law Centennial Commission, has helped raise P1.13 billion for the college, part of which will go toward the initial phase of the construction of the UP Professional School. (30)
