Trillanes: Gilas' triumph embodies Filipino spirit

Senator Antonio "Sonny" F. Trillanes IV files resolution congratulating and commending the coaching staff, officials and members of the Gilas Pilipinas National Team for bagging the silver medal in the FIBA Asia and qualifying in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

Trillanes said: "This victorious resurgence in the history of Philippines Basketball reclaims the stature of Philippines as a dominant force in Asian basketball. And the outstanding performance of Gilas Pilipinas deserves the recognition for having brought honor and pride to our countrymen."

Under Senate Resolution No. 185, Trillanes recognizes the gallant stance made by the Philippine team. During the championship fight between Iran and Philippines, even without their "big man" Marcus Douthit, the National Team managed to put up a good fight despite falling 85-71, and settling for a silver medal. Prior to this, the Gilas Pilipinas basketball team defeated South Korea thereby allowing the Philippines to advance and compete in the world basketball stage after 35 long years of absence.

The competitive and high-spirited Gilas Pilipinas is headed by Coach Chot Reyes and elite players namely Junmar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Ranidel de Ocampo, Marc Pingris, Gary David, Jeff Chan, Larry Fonacier, Gabe Norwood, Jayson Castro, LA Tenorio, Jimmy Alapag, and Marcus Douthit.

"Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds - huge height disadvantage against opponents and injuries plaguing our players - the Philippine team managed to bring out the best of the Filipino spirit, and proved their worth as true Filipino champions through their passion and skills," Trillanes remarked.
