Senate adopts 4 resolutions

The Senate today adopted a resolution expressing the country's gratitude to members of the international community for their humanitarian response to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. Sen. Loren Legarda, who authored Resolution 427, said victims in Tacloban and Samar had received immediate assistance from the international community in the form of relief supplies, transport, logistical aid and medical services.

"15 Member States of the UN had military assets operating here in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda and more than 25 foreign military aircraft from 11 different Member States were delivering relief items to residents in typhoon-stricken areas," Legarda said. "The support of other countries, international organizations and our other partners from around the world, who stood side-by-side with us in this moment of great challenge is a source of inspiration as the country strives to rise from the massive loss of lives and property and is worth commending," she added.

The Senate also adopted a resolution congratulating Overseas Filipino Worker Rose "Osang" Fostanes for having been named the first winner of the X-Factor Israel last January 14.

Resolution 418, authored by Sen. Manuel "Lito" Lapid was adopted, taking into consideration Senate Resolutions 454 and 457, authored by Sen. Nancy Binay and Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano respectively.

Lapid said Fostanes brought glory and pride to the country and has shown the greatness of Filipino talent.

For his part, Cayetano said that Fostanes, who hailed from Taguig, "serves as an inspiration to all OFWs and to all Filipinos by proving that with perseverance, determination and hard work, it is possible to attain and fulfill one's goal."

Meanwhile, the Senate adopted Resolution 419, taking into consideration Resolutions 420 and 433, commending Bea Rose Santiago for bagging the 2013 Miss International title in Tokyo, Japan last December 17.

Lapid, who authored Resolution 419, said Santiago "gave Filipinos unparalleled pride and showed the world the grace and excellence of Filipino beauty" when she won the 53rd Miss International crown, outshining 66 other candidates from all over the world.

Sen. Grace Poe had authored Resolutions 420 while Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito authored Resolution 433.

The Senate also adopted Resolution 456 commending Brillante Mendoza for being recognized as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.

Legarda, who authored Resolution 456, said Mendoza was recognized for his significant contribution in promoting the arts in France and all over the world.

Legarda said the French Ministry of Culture had formally informed Mendoza of his designation as a Chevalier De L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres on June 2013. Mendoza won the Best Director Award in the 2009 Cannes Film Festival for his film Kinatay.

"This recognition affirms the world class creativity and innovation possessed by Filipino filmmakers," Legarda said.
