Senate honors Dr. Alonzo Gabriel

The Senate today adopted a resolution commending University of the Philippines (UP) professor and scientist Dr. Alonzo Gabriel for being named as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) by the Junior Chamber International (JCI).

Senate Resolution No, 875, introduced by Senator Manuel "Lito" M. Lapid, recognized Gabriel for his know-how in food science, focusing on food hygiene and nutrition, and for sharing his thoughts and knowledge on proper food preparation to street vendors and mothers.

"Dr. Gabriel helps micro and small scale industry stakeholders who do not have the ability to conduct their own research to stay updated with the newest food safety and processing innovations," the Resolution said, adding that the doctor is also passionate in helping those with family-based industries, "as they are often marginalized or underprivileged across communities."

"His advocacy for improved food quality, safety and defense moves farmers, fishermen and food manufacturers to comply with international standards for production, distribution and trade," the Resolution further stated.

The TOYP is annually awarded by JCI to young people who excel in their fields of expertise. It was adopted from the TOYP program of the United States Junior Chamber, which was established in 1931.

This year's Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World recognized Dr, Alonzo Gabriel for his academic leadership and accomplishment.

Previous beneficiaries of the TOYP included distinguished and renowned personalities like Queen Rania Al Abdullah II of Jordan, actor Jackie Chan, Filipina Ballerina Lisa Macuja, and Senator Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino, among many others. All of them were recognized before they reached the age of 40. (Yvonne Almirañez)
