Koko asks public to be calm and circumspect
amidst calls for the President's resignation

Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III today asked the people to keep calm and be circumspect on calls for the President's resignation over the deaths of 44 Special Action Force commandos of the Philippine National Police, who were killed recently in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.

"I understand the sentiments of the people, but, what we need right now is to find out the truth about the incident in Mamasapano so that we can bring to the bar of justice those who are accountable for their deaths," Pimentel, a native of Mindanao, said.

Pimentel, chairman of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, stressed that the President's resignation is not the right solution to the crisis that the nation is facing now.

"If any, the resignation of the President will only be counter-productive since this will lead to a shake-up in the government. In this highly volatile situation, we need a leader. We need the President to lead us out of these dark days," he said.

"The government is doing its best to get to the bottom of this. Let us give the government a chance to right the wrong," Pimentel said.

Pimentel also asked the people to support the bill he co-authored which seeks the creation of an independent "Truth Commission" to probe the Mamasapano incident.
