Senate marks 100 years of legislation

The Senate will mark 100 years of policy making and public service with a year-long series of activities starting with a flag raising ceremony on Monday, October 12, 2015.

Senate President Franklin M. Drilon, who will deliver his centennial message during the flag raising ceremony, will kick off the celebration with the presentation and awarding of the 2014 Senate Secretariat Exemplary Employee Awards.

The activity will be followed with the unveiling of a brass marker containing Proclamation No. 1091, declaring October 2015 to October 2016 as the Centennial Year of the Senate of the Philippines, signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III last August 7.

"It has been a century of big achievements and great challenges, of trials and of triumphs in service of the Filipino people, and we would like to invite you to come join us and the rest of the Filipino nation as we start celebrating the Senate Centennial Year starting this October 12, 2015 with the theme 'Sandigan ng Demokrasya, Dangal ng Sambayanang Pilipino'," Drilon said.

Other activities slated include a Eucharistic Mass celebration to be officiated by Bishop Broderick Pabillo of the Auxillary Bishops of Manila at 12 p.m, followed by a bike caravan hosted by the Senate Bikers Club at 2 p.m. and a 3-kilometer fun run organized by the followed by a fun run hosted by the Samahan ng mga Empleyadong Nagkakaisa sa Adhikain ng Demokratikong Organisasyon (S.E.N.A.D.O.) at 3:30 p.m. The event will be capped with a fireworks display at night.

Prior to Monday's kick-off activities, the Senate Choir held a mini-concert last Thursday, October 8. The Senate Anniversary Golf Fellowship was also held last Friday, October 9, at the Philippine Navy Golf Club in Taguig.

Proclamation No. 1091, which formally set the observance of the "Centennial Year of the Philippine Senate," from October 2015 to October 2016, called on all national government, state universities and colleges (SUCs), government-owned or controlled corporations (GOCCs), and local government units (LGUs), to support and extend "the necessary assistance in the observance of the Senate's 100th anniversary."

"We have a lot in store for all of you in this year-long Centennial celebration, so we'd like you to be one with us in reliving the glorious past hundred years of the Senate, as we look forward with hope to the bright future ahead," Drilon said.

According to Senate Secretary Oscar G. Yabes, other events and programs have been planned to celebrate the Senate centennial, among them a Senate Centennial Lecture Series.

"The committee is focusing on activities that will allow people to better understand what the role of the Senate is in nation building, what it has done in the past 100 years, and what it continues to do today, he said. (Yvonne A. Almirañez)
