STATEMENT OF SEN. KIKO PANGILINAN ON PEACE TALKS BETWEEN GPH AND CPP-NPA-NDF

We welcome the silencing of the guns brought on by the indefinite ceasefire between the GRP and the CPP NPA NDF.

We laud the Duterte Administration's peace efforts both with the communist insurgents as well as the Muslim secessionists.

Let us give peace a chance and hopefully these efforts will lead to the silencing of the guns for all time.

Both the indefinite ceasefire and the GRP panel's recommendation to President Rodrigo Duterte to grant amnesty to all political prisoners are concrete progress in the country's decades' long quest for peace. This also ends the five-year impasse on the formal talks in the peace negotiations between the two parties.

We, as member of the Senate, will support the general amnesty, which is subject to congressional approval, once we have received all the supporting documents from both parties.

Ending the bloodshed of Filipinos by fellow Filipinos over age-old problems of poverty, inequality, and injustice is a big step forward toward ending these root causes of the armed conflict, these triple threat obstacles to progress and peace.
