POE REMINDS TELCOS TO SEND DISASTER TEXT ALERTS

Sen. Grace Poe today reminded telecommunications firms to send text alerts to its subscribers as severe tropical storm Nina (international name: Nock-Ten) approaches the country and may intensify into a typhoon on Christmas day.

Poe, chairperson of the Senate committee on public services and one of the authors of Republic Act No. 10639 or the Free Mobile Disaster Alerts Act, said text alerts are crucial as the public prepares for a wet Christmas.

"May I remind the telcos of their obligation under the law to send out message alerts to properly warn subscribers who live within the areas that will be affected by Typhoon Nina, of the dangers and the precautions they need to take," said Poe.

The senator also called on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to come up with well thought out warnings that are useful and easy to understand by all intended recipients.

"Finally, I urge our people who might be affected to please heed the text alerts for their safety and well-being," Poe added.
