University hails Sen. Bam as outstanding young legislator

BATANGAS CITY -- The Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) here honored Sen. Bam Aquino with the Outstanding Young Legislator Award in recognition of his outstanding performance as lawmaker.

Sen. Bam received the award during the 10th LPU Awards of Excellence from LPU officials, led by president Dr. Peter Laurel, executive vice president Dr. Esmenia Javier and Atty. Reynolds Beredo JD, Office of Students Affairs director.

"I would like to express my sincerest gratitude for this Outstanding Young Legislator Award," said Sen. Bam. "It warms my heart to be acknowledged for all the work we've done over the past 3, almost 4 years in the Senate".

The university conferred Sen. Bam with the honor for his exemplary performance as lawmaker, working for the passage of 17 laws in the 16th Congress, including the Go Negosyo Act and the landmark Philippine Competition Act.

As chairman of the Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, Sen. Bam also pushed for the passage of the Foreign Ships Co-Loading Act or Amendments to the Cabotage Policy, Youth Entrepreneurship Act, Microfinance NGOs Act and Credit Surety Act.

In the 17th Congress, Sen. Bam worked for the passage of the Affordable Higher Education for All Act and the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act on third and final reading.

Sen. Bam, who sponsored and co-authored the Affordable Higher Education for All Act, defended the bill during interpellation before he was removed as chairman of the Committee on Education.

This bill seeks to make tuition fees free in all state universities and colleges (SUCs) around the country, as well as strengthen the student aid programs of the government.

The senator also sponsored the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act, which is seen to complement the government's approved national broadband plan to help improve Internet access across the country.
