AKBAYAN SENATOR RISA HONTIVEROS ON DUTERTE TAGGED AS "THREAT TO DEMOCRACY"

The report from the United States intelligence community saying that President Rodrigo Duterte, a self-confessed dictator, is a threat to democracy is not surprising.

What does the Duterte government expect from the international community, accolades?

The report merely confirms the growing isolation of the country from the international community and the already prevalent global opinion that President Duterte's governance is contrary to the generally accepted principles of democracy, human rights and rule of law.

The report is also an international embarassment to the country. For our President to be placed alongside Cambodian leader Hun Sen, the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar and Thailand's military-backed constitution as threats to democracy is dishonorable. It brings profound shame to our countrymen and women, especially those who are stationed abroad.

I fear that if the country will not go back to the ways of democracy, the Philippines may soon lose its good standing in the international community.
