Koko: Only Federalists welcome to PDP slate

Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, the President of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban), announced on Sunday that only those who support Federalism can be entertained as candidates under its banner in the coming 2019 elections.

The ruling party, with more than 300,000 members across the country, has Federalism as one of its guiding principles.

"You cannot be a member of PDP Laban, much less a candidate of the Party, and not support one of its core tenets", said Pimentel.

In addition, Pimentel said that the prospective candidates must support the programs of the Party Chairman, President Rodrigo Duterte, until the end of his term.

Pimentel added that the Party is open to considering non-PDP members, provided that they are supportive of Federalism and the President, but that Party members will have priority in the selection process.

The announcement came as the Party begins preparations for the 2019 elections in the aftermath of massive oathtaking rallies in different provinces.

In a recent show of force, 30,000 new Party members took their oaths in Bulacan before top officials of PDP Laban at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center, a far cry from the earliest oathtaking ceremonies of the Party, which were usually held under the shade of banana trees.

PDP Laban has assisted Duterte in delivering six of his nine major campaign promises in less than two years, in keeping with its motto of Change.
