MARCOS BILL CITES BENEFITS FOR ROTC TRAINEES

(27 JULY 2019) - Senator Imee R. Marcos emphasized Saturday that she is not opposed to the Reserved Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program for college students but only for those in grades 11 and 12 who are still considered children, according to United Nations guidelines.

Marcos pointed out that Senate Bill 413, which she authored, actually entices college students to take ROTC because of the free medical insurance and services that will be given them during their military training, with ROTC officers even getting a stipend.

"In fact, the bill creates interest in the ROTC program among college students, similar to how it's being done in America," Marcos exlpained.

Marcos said that the bill retains ROTC as an option to her proposed Citizen Services Program for training in community service, disaster preparedness, and environmental protection "to develop an everyday sense of 'bayanihan' embodied in Filipino culture and history."

"The Citizen Services Program complements ROTC training as set out in the bill, while recognizing our obligations to the United Nations resolution and other declarations that protect the rights of a child," Marcos added.
