NANCY ASKS DEPED TO ALLOW USE OF LONG PANTS INSTEAD OF SCHOOL UNIFORMS AMID CONTINUED DENGUE THREAT

Senator Nancy Binay urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to study the possibility of suspending the wearing of school uniforms amid the continuing dengue threat in the country.

In a letter to Sec. Leonor Briones of the Department of Education, Binay noted how students can wear jogging pants or long pants instead of uniforms until the dengue cases are controlled.

"I am respectfully requesting that your office study the possibility of allowing students to forgo the wearing of uniforms in school in favor of clothing like long sleeves, knee-high socks, and jogging/long pants that would add extra protection against insect bites," Binay said in the letter.

The Department of Health had earlier declared a national dengue alert due to the rapid rise in the number of cases of the disease.

Latest data from the agency show that from January 1 to August 31, 2019, 271,480 dengue cases, including 1,107 deaths have been reported through its routine surveillance system.

"It is only fitting that we explore all possible avenues to ensure that our children are protected from this health risk," Binay said.

"This is but a small step we can do that could go a long way towards preventing our children from contracting the disease," she added.
