On World Teachers' Day, Gordon honors Filipino teachers during this pandemic

Senator Richard J. Gordon today paid tribute to Filipino teachers and educators for their sacrifices and dedication to educate and shape the minds and character of our youth, especially during this difficult time of the new coronavirus pandemic.

In his message on the occasion of World Teachers' Day today, Gordon said the Senate recognizes the myriad challenges of Filipino teachers who are mostly overworked and underpaid since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020.

"Let us take this opportunity to thank our teachers by showing them how much they mean to us. Be assured that the Senate is working conscientiously to increase the salaries and benefits of our teachers in the public and private institutions," he said.

In Sept. 2019, it may be recalled that Gordon is one of the signatories of Senate Resolution 142 honoring and commending Filipino teachers. The Senate unanimously adopted the resolution, now logged as Senate Resolution 14.

Gordon noted how Filipino teachers have been struggling with many problems of blended learning where they and their students or pupils have to confront the lack of printed modules and the dismally poor internet service connectivity.

"Alam ko po ang inyong mga sakripisyo upang magampanan ang inyong mga tungkulin. Nariyan po ang kakulangan sa sahod, na minsan ang mga guro pa natin ang nag-aabono para sa mga modules, ganun din po ang mga guro na tumatawid pa sa mga bundok at ilog upang mapuntahan ang kaniyang mga estudyante," he said.

According to him, despite these problems brought about by the new coronavirus pandemic, Filipino teachers have remained steadfast in helping shape the next generation of Filipinos in the best way they can.

"Even as we face the COVID-19 pandemic, our teachers continue their labor of love by pursuing alternative learning methods conducive to our students even as they soldier on without proper equipment," he said.

"This shows their commitment to quality education through efforts that shape the hearts and minds of our youth," he added.

Gordon, a lawyer by profession, urged the national and local governments to invest on education sector in support the Filipino teachers who play a very important role in nation-building by imparting the youth the values of excellence and integrity. Gordon is a proud alumnus of the Ateneo University Manila, expressing his affinity for the Jesuit institution's patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary, by wearing the October Medal during the Catholic Church's designated month of the Holy Rosary.
