Re: Continuing tension at Ayungin Shoal / Second Thomas Shoal

I condemn the Chinese Coast Guard's water cannon attack on the Philippine Coast Guard's resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal.

The Philippines and China are co-signatories of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which upholds the concepts of sovereign rights within a country's exclusive economic zone and of innocent passage within a country's territorial sea.

It is urgent for the Foreign Affairs and Defense departments to demand an explanation from their Chinese counterparts for the unwarranted and patently illegal firing of a water cannon on our Coast Guard.

We must also see to it that our Coast Guard becomes better equipped but relies less on foreign countries that have their own national interests to pursue.

Kinokondena ko ang pagkanyon ng tubig ng Chinese Coast Guard sa Philippine Coast Guard resupply mission sa Ayungin Shoal.

Ang Pilipinas at China ay kapwa lumagda sa United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) na nagtataguyod ng konsepto ng sovereign rights o karapatan sa soberanya sa loob ng exclusive economic zone ng bansa at ang inosenteng pagdaan sa loob ng territorial sea ng isang bansa.

Kailangang madaliin ng mga departamento ng Foreign Affairs at Defense na mahingan nila ng paliwanag ang kanilang mga Chinese counterpart para sa hindi nararapat at malinaw na ilegal na pangsasaboy ng tubig sa ating Coast Guard.

Dapat din nating tiyakin na ang ating Coast Guard ay maarmasan ng mahuhusay na pangdepensa at hindi gaanong umaasa sa mga dayuhang bansa na itinutulak ang pansariling interes.
