Judiciary’s fiscal autonomy: Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III presides over the Committee on Justice and Human Rights hearing to discuss the issues surrounding the fiscal autonomy of judicial branch of the government. During Tuesday’s hearing, December 10, 2024, Pimentel asked Court Administrator Raul Villanueva to further discuss the position of the Judiciary with regard to Senate Bill Nos. 1996, 2111, and 2659 or the Fiscal Autonomy Act of the Judicial Branch of Government. “Fiscal autonomy from wording of the Constitutions according to our court administrator can mean that the budget of the Judiciary once approved should be released automatically and regularly and that the bottom line it can’t be reduced,” Pimentel stressed. “And this bill includes on how to approve the fiscally autonomous judicial department,” he added. According to the bill, allowing the Judiciary to fully enjoy the extent of fiscal autonomy granted by the Constitution can help pave the way for a more effective and swifter administration of justice in our country.
