'Who are we without our culture?': This was the piercing question raised by Sen. Loren Legarda during a public hearing Wednesday, January 15, 2025, on Senate Bill No. (SBN) 624 also known as Establishing the Linangan Ng Likhang-Bayan; SBN 116 or the Local Studies Center; SBN 244 otherwise known as the Philippine Culinary Heritage Art and SBN 2663 that seeks to expand the composition of the Board of National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Legarda, who chairs the Committee on Culture and the Arts, said culture is more than just a stimulus for economic growth. It is an embodiment of the Filipino identity as a nation and an engine of empowerment. “Culture is not a footnote in the narrative of progress, nor is it an indulgence or an expendable item to be pushed to the margins. Culture is the glue that binds us as a people. To dismiss it is to strip humanity of its soul, reducing life to a mere existence,” Legarda said. (Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau) |
