Signal, speed, security, and affordability: Sen. Grace L. Poe says the government should address the problems of signal, speed, security, and affordability of internet services in the country. “It is a basic human right now to have an internet access. In fact, the development of a country is also hinged on its ability to be able to access internet and digital services,” Poe said during Wednesday’s hearing, January 15, 2025, of the Committee on Public Services. “If we just improve our signal we can harness this to empower our countrymen,” she added. According to Poe, out of 169 countries, the Philippines ranked 56 among those with poor internet service despite being one of the active users of social media. At present, the Philippines has 23,000 cell towers, Vietnam has 90,000 while Bangladesh has 30,000 cell towers. Poe blamed the inadequate cell towers due to long process and several requirements of putting up cell towers in the country. (Senate Public Relations and Information Bureau) |
