6TH BIKE FOR HOPE:
CAYETANO BRINGS ENVIRONMENTAL
MESSAGE TO LAGUNA--ON TWO WHEELS

Senator Pia S. Cayetano will lead some 700 bike enthusiasts across the province of Laguna to pitch for greater environmental awareness and women empowerment at the sixth staging of "Bike for Hope" on February 10.

The senator's advocacy ride will travel 100 kilometers and 14 towns from Sta. Rosa to Pakil then head back to the provincial capital of Sta. Cruz for the culminating activity.

More than just a sports event, "Bike for Hope" promotes environmental education, women's rights and empowerment and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

"It is our advocacy to champion and raise awareness on issues such as the environment, health and women," stressed Cayetano, a triathlete and member of the national duathlon team training pool.

Proceeds raised from the event will be used for the construction of the country's first liver center in memory of the senator's father, the late senator 'Compañero' Rene Cayetano, who suffered from chronic Hepatitis B before passing away due to intra-abdominal cancer in 2003.

"Putting up the country's first liver center has been one of the visions of the Compañero Rene Cayetano Foundation, both in memory of my father and as our family's contribution to nationwide efforts to battle diseases of the liver," stressed the senator, who also chairs the senate committees on health and demography and environment and natural resources.

The bike event is also the senator's way of promoting cycling as a healthy, environment-friendly and "absolutely carbon dioxide-free" means of transportation especially in light of the recent warnings by the United Nations and environmental groups on global warming and climate change.

The bike event will usher in community seminars on February 11 and 12 on such topics as breastfeeding, the Anti-Violence against Women and Children Act and solid waste management in the towns of Bay, Pagsanjan, Pakil, Calamba, Sta. Rosa, Calauan, Paete and Sta. Cruz. Sports and fitness clinics will also be held for female high school students.

Bike for Hope was started by the Cayetano siblings in 2004, and has been staged in Baguio, Cebu, La Union-Vigan and Misamis Oriental.
